So as I mentioned at the end of the last Lip Combo post (have a lil’ refresher here), I had another lip combination I wanted to share with you guys, and as promised, here’s The Nude!
So over the Christmas hols, I had managed to leave every single lipstick I own back at uni. Safe to say I was pretty heartbroken when I realised this and thank God it was short lived when I stumbled upon this little gem.
I didn’t even know H&M had a cosmetics range (just me who was the late bloomer with this orrr…?)! I only realised when I had a quick browse on their website doing some Christmas shopping. I then had this issue of picking a shade as there was such a range – lovely nudes to deep berry reds. I went with Downtown Red as it looked closest to the classic red I usually have and would be a good replacement for any parties I had in the festive season. I was concerned it wouldn’t suit my darker skin tone because I couldn’t find any dark skin swatches online but at £3.99, I think it’s worth a try (I know I know what’s £4 really, but money’s money….am I student or am I a student?!).
Boy am I happy I took the £4 plunge! I fully fell in love with this lipstick as soon as I tried it on. It comes in very simple packaging – Long black tube with “LIPSTICK by H&M” written across and there is a small transparent bottom where you see the shade. Now I will say, this does not show the true shade – the bullet is a truer picture of the deeper red with berry/cool undertones. This was a surprise considering I wanted a classic popping red – but a pleasant surprise at that as I always find myself either mixing shades or darkening my lipstick to achieve such a colour! So no complaints there!
It’s an absolute dream to apply; at the £4 mark some people wouldn’t expect the quality to be that good. It’s very moisturising in application with no tugging and every swipe is that lovely and pigmented berry red I adore. As I prefer a matte finish, I blot down the moisture shine it gives and usually this can take away pigmentation but this isn’t the case- if anything I think it looks better and more striking as a matte colour. But each to their own…
Here’s a swatch of the lipstick and what it looks like on; one swipe applied straight from the bullet, blotted down and lightly applied again:
I put this lipstick to the test soon and wore it to a Christmas dinner and dance. Obviously there was a lot of eating and drinking and taking which left little time to reapply so I didn’t (oop) and considering all the above, I’d say for the first hour or so, the colour stayed in tact. Yes there was transfer onto my glass and yes the colour did fade in the later part of the night but in its defence, due to the berry like undertones, the fade was a nice (slightly deeper) rosy hue on the lips. Which I luckily managed to get away with because a) it was dark b) it still looked decent and c) I didn’t really care at this point because it was dark and…well food.
As I said, I’m obviously of a darker skin tone and I think this shade really compliments the skin tone so nicely and offers a darker alternative to the usual bright red lip. Also it contributes to making your teeth look a lovely sparkly white – always a plus. People who are of paler complexion may initially be wary of the deep was of this shade, however I can imagine this would look lush as a striking statement matte lip against a neutral/barely there face and eyes. If you’re not feeling so brave, maybe try using a lip brush instead of straight from the bullet to give a more subtle lip stain that adds that little extra pop of colour instead of the whole shebang.
Only qualm I have about this lipstick is that it can be a pain to remove when you actually want to take it off. It leaves a slight pink stain and your lips feel slightly sore from trying to scrub it off. I’d suggest using a strong eye or lip makeup remover rather than just a makeup remover wipe.
Other than that, I LOVE this lipstick shade and it’s fast becoming my go to night time lipstick (sorry MUA and Rimmel, I still love you I promise). I had my eye on other shades in the range and recently caved and got “B for Boss” – a nude which I pray will actually work as a nude for my skin tone without looking like dream matte mousse lips (pray for me). I’ll more than likely be doing a post all about it so stay tuned to see my thoughts!
Have any of you guys purchased anything from the H&M cosmetics range? Also what lip liner would you guys recommend for this shade, I’m struggling to find a good match that’s not too pricey! Feel free to let me know on Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr or just comment below!
Hope you enjoyed this post, thanks for reading 🙂
Until next time,
I’ve been meaning to do a Beauty Wishlist post for sometime now but I kept finding my list growing and never ending which would’ve been a lengthy post. In a bid to save money, I’ve been putting together wishlists, so in this post I’m just gonna share some of the main beauty buys I’m looking to get when I’m feeling a bit indulgent.
1. L’Oreal True Match Foundation
I’ve been seeing the TV ad for this foundation everywhere and was intrigued to see if they would find a match for my skin tone which I find to be rare. I did the quiz online and it came up with shade N8/N9. I tried the tester out in Superdrug the other day and I was pleasantly surprised that it matched well! So at only £9.99, its looking like a contender for my usual Maybelline New York FitMe Foundation (shade 355). You can find your True Match shade here.
2. Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Foundation
Now I usually admire higher end brands from far because I don’t feel like I can justify spending £30 on a sole product when I can get a few for the same price that work just as well for me. This being said, I’m very tempted to get this foundation after seeing generally positive reviews and pictures of it – it seems to give a very even yet natural finish to the skin which is always nice. At the moment I’m guessing I’d be a cross between Rich Chesnut and Rich Cocoa and maybe Spice but I’ll definitely be on the look out for testers and samples on my next department store trip to find my shade,
3. Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Black Cherry
This has now been upgraded to a “must-have” on my list. I was in town the other day and did a swatch of the lipstick and i LOVED the colour – on my skin, it came up as a lovely burgundy colour which is a *slight* change to my usual red or plum. What I love most about this lipstick is that it stays on – the swatch I had on was still apparent after a good 12 hours (even after a good scrub!). So yeah definitely getting this lipstick as it ticks all the boxes for me: great quality, gorgeous colour AND affordable – its only £7.49 in most shops!
So these are top on my never ending beauty wishlist, what are your top beauty buys on your wishlist? if you’ve got any of these, I’d love to know what you thought of them in the comments below!
Until next time,
[Let’s forget I’m a day late and just pretend I’m on American time for this post].
As you may or may not have seen on my Instagram, around 90% of my going out-out looks include some form of lipstick – usually plum or bright red and ALWAYS matte. I’m not ’bout that gloss life. So to celebrate ‘National Lipstick Day’, I thought I’d share the lipsticks I use!
1. MUA Matte Lipstick in Wild Berry, £1
This was an impulse buy when in Superdrug a few months ago and I admit when I first tried it, I was disappointed. I assumed the colour would be a rich plum but it wasn’t as pigmented as I had hoped and to get the colour to show up you need to build up the colour a lot, almost like a lip balm. With a lot of build up it comes up as a rosy plummy colour on my lips. HOWEVER, I’ve grown to love it and use it as a subtler colour for nights out and recently a wedding. More like a lip stain to give some colour to my lips but great when I don’t want to distract from my eye makeup.
2. MUA Lipstick Shade 1 from £1 Lipstick Range, £1
*Toya from Big Brother voice* Lemme tell you something, MUA £1 lipsticks are the ONE. I’m yet to find another beauty buy that will impress me as much as these lipsticks. I prefer my matte reds leaning towards darker plum like colours so Shade 1 is perfect for me! Again, I tend to wear this on a night out and I often make it darker to become plum with a black/grey eyeshadow as you can see in this picture.
3. Maybelline Colour Sensational Lipstick in Pleasure Me Red (547)
I actually borrowed (and never to be returned) this one from my mum a long while back so I don’t know the price or where she got it from but I had a quick look and shops like Superdrug and Boots are selling them for around £7. I love this one because whilst its still bright and rich in its red colour, its not too loud. This one is usually a go to for a night out as well (sensing a pattern yet?), usually when I’m wearing print and I don’t want my look to be too loud.
4. Rimmel London Volume Lipstick in Voluptuous (120)
Again this is another “borrowed” gem so I’m unsure of the price or where to get it as its possibly discontinued. Sigh. Now this is my brightest lipstick yet which I’ve found to be the perfect pairing for my all black everything looks, or just anything I feel could do with some colour. I’d like to think it’s quite summery which I love because I struggle to find summer lipsticks that suit my skin tone.
5. MissSporty Sheer Shine Lipstick (020)
This is my most recent one, but I actually don’t know where it was from as it was in a gift bag. i don’t use this one by itself because it is a sheer shine and as I’ve said not a fan. BUT I’ve found that it can double up as a lip balm and a nude lip colour over a little bit of foundation…and it smells good. I recently used it with my MUA Wild Berry Lipstick for a wedding and it did help bring the colour out. Its not a favourite but I’m slowly finding ways to make it work for me.
